Council shrugs off rugby doubts on stadium plan

COUNCIL bosses steering York's community stadium scheme have shrugged off the city's rugby league club boss's newly revealed disenchantment with the project.

York City Knights proprietor John Guildford has quit the project board and asked York Council not to spend any more taxpayers' money on the scheme until the future of the club is assured by a binding legal agreement.

It currently plays in Huntington Stadium which is owned by York Council but the various leases connected with the arrangement run out in 2012.

Mr Guildford has sent a letter to the council executive asking for guarantees the Knights would be able to stay at Huntington Stadium or ground-share at York City Football Club's Bootham Crescent until the new stadium is ready for both clubs.

The letter calls for York Council, the football club and rugby club to have a binding agreement before the spending of "any more of the taxpayers' money".

Coun Steve Galloway, the council's executive member for city strategy, said York Council wanted both rugby and football clubs on board but it was entirely a matter for them.

He continued: "I appreciate both are private sector companies and have their own objectives. But at the moment the project is going ahead."
