Council starts to increase recycling bin collections

East Riding Council will begin to extend the service this month – and aims to reach all 150,000 households in the borough over the next six months.

The council is also encouraging residents to take up the option of have bigger blue bins as it continues its drive to push household recycling rates up.

Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “The recycling of glass, more types of plastic and Tetra Pak cartons in the blue bins is the latest of our recent initiatives to keep recyclable waste out of landfill. We are projecting it will keep an additional 3,800 tonnes of glass out of landfill.

“New technologies have become available which can handle mixed papers, cans, plastics and glass. The materials are separated out and reprocessed into other products. Glass, for example, is easily recyclable and does not degrade, however often it is recycled. The new service aims to provide residents with an easy way to recycle even more materials while, at the same time, saving council tax payers’ money.”

Residents are being urged not to put the extra items in their bins until they have had a letter informing them the collections have reached their area. The service will start in Holderness between June 27 and July 22 and be available in all areas by January.

The average family uses about 330 glass bottles and jars a year. Glass can be recycled indefinitely but will never decompose in landfill.
