Councillor quits whip in bullying row

A COUNCILLOR has resigned from the ruling Tory group on East Riding Council citing “bullying and intimidation.” Coun Nick Evans said he didn’t want to be member any longer of “something which seems more of a dictatorship than a democratic organisation.”

Coun Evans added: “I don’t want to be part of an organisation where bullying and intimidation is rife and where everyone has to toe the line and do exactly what they are told to do. You could vote against (the whip) but people aren’t going to do that because it is not allowed and if you ever do something like that you may as well kiss goodbye to any aspirations you have.” Chief whip Coun Bryan Pearson said: “I don’t know of any of that going on in my group. It is always straight talking, but no bullying. We are not talking about a Sunday school trip, it sometimes gets a bit heated.”
