Councillors to decide on stadium demolition

The derelict former home of one of the oldest football clubs in the country that was wound up four years ago has been officially earmarked for demolition.

Scarborough’s McCain Stadium will be bulldozed to pave the way for redevelopment if councillors agree to back the planning officer’s recommendation to knock it down when it goes before town councillors on Thursday.

The Seamer Road site will be used as a makeweight to help to fund a multi-million pound scheme to build a new leisure village in Scarborough, which will provide a ground for the town’s new fledgling football team.

The results of an eight-week public consultation on proposals for the leisure village were expected to be presented to the council’s Environment and Economy Scrutiny Committee yesterday.

The consultation focused on three development briefs which outlined plans for the village in Weaponness Valley, as well as housing developments on the Seamer Road site and the Filey Road sports centre.

Meanwhile developers who plan to turn the former Scarborough Rugby Club site into a health village have applied to Scarborough Council’s planning department to extend the time limit for the scheme. The Scalby Road site has stood empty for over a year.
