Councillors ready to drive through lorry route plans

Sheffield could see a network of routes for heavy goods vehicles established to try to ease congestion in the city.

Proposals for a preferred set of routes for HGVs are set out in a report going before the cabinet’s highways committee next week.

Officials say an HGV route network would allow the council to develop proposals to promote its use so that HGVs would be less likely to use unsuitable routes, such as narrow residential roads.

The move would also let the council suggest proposals to deal with existing congestion points at Abbey Lane and Bocking Lane, the Mayfield Valley and Attercliffe Centre.

Council officers have consulted residents and a review concluded that Abbey Lane (B6068), Whirlowdale Road (B6375) and Bocking Lane are the only suitable routes in the south of Sheffield for HGVs to get to areas bounded by the A621, A625 and A61.

The City Council’s cabinet highways committee will consider the report at their meeting next Thursday.
