Councillors see red over post office closure

Councillors have voted to write to managers expressing their dismay at proposals to close down the main post office in an East Riding town.

Since last October, staff at the post office in the Square, Hessle, have been in limbo after the owners of the franchise announced it was up for sale.

The closing date of November came and went and posters announcing the sale were removed, but staff are no wiser as to their future. At East Riding Council's meeting, Lib Dem councillor Brian Jefferies led a motion to write to managers, backed by councillors including ward colleague Coun Philip Davison, pictured outside the Post Office.

Coun Davison said: "We are hoping Post Office Counters accept that this is vital. The alternative is First Lane, around a mile and a half away, where there is a small shop with a post office facility but it is not really acceptable."

A member of staff said: "We have just been waiting – that's all we can do. Hopefully someone will take us over."

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail group said: "There has been interest in the position at Hessle Post Office and Post Office Ltd are working hard to find a long-term solution for services in the area."
