Councillors set to visit town’s ‘noisy’ club

COUNCILLORS are to visit a nightclub during the day following complaints that loud music could disturb hotel guests.

The Eden club in Huddersfield’s Beast Market has been used as a nightclub venue for years but recent events have taken place under Temporary Event Notices.

An application has been submitted for a premises licence but this is being opposed by a council department which investigates noise complaints.

In a report, a senior environmental officer said: “The premises in its current state is unsuitable for the operation of a nightclub.

“There are significant noise break out points, the main being the flat roof, the ventilation ports ... (and) the fire doors to Southgate.”

The report concludes that “a significant amount of structural improvements are required to bring the premises up to the standard of a modern nightclub which allows an acceptable level of entertainment ... while at the same time not causing a nuisance to neighbouring premises.”

A second officer said the noise was sufficient to disturb sleep at a nearby hotel. A decision is expected at a council licensing meeting tomorrow following a visit to the club at 10.30am.
