Councillor’s son jailed for attacking man in car

Majid Hussain, 28, whose father is Abid Hussain (Lab, Keighley Central), rammed an Audi at a parked Honda as driver Zulfran Suleman was getting out, crushing his leg, a court heard.

The Audi had earlier been attacked by a gang of men nearby but prosecutor Jayne Beckett said the victim and his passenger had not been involved.

Hussain, of Devonshire Street, Keighley, where the incident happened, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The court was told he had been jailed after driving at someone in 2005.

Judge was told the incident in August was “a tiny part” of a turf war between two rival Keighley factions known as the top-enders and bottom-enders, between whom there had been a large-scale disorder earlier that day.

Mrs Beckett said the trouble had been going on for about a decade and was linked to the “roundabout murders” – referring to the killing of Qadir Ahmed, 24, on Victoria Park roundabout in 2002 and a number of associated murders.

Hussain’s barrister, Yunus Valli, said his client was not involved in the town’s gang warfare and did not belong to either group. But he said he had acted recklessly and was genuinely remorseful.
