Councillors to vote on blueprint for transport

COUNCILLORS in Hull will vote this week on the blueprint that could decide how millions of pounds worth of transport and traffic schemes in the city are carried out over the next 15 years.

Councillors will be urged to approve the Local Transport Plan (LTP) so it can be submitted to the Department for Transport by March 31.

Major schemes on the cards include new park and ride sites in East and North Hull and completion of a programme of improvements along the busiest corridors into the city.

Future expansion of the city's cycle network and the Real Time Bus Information system are also key goals, as are improvements to A1165 Great Union Street to complete the eastern side of the orbital network.

Also planned are further improvements to rail freight access to the port and a 24 hour rail connection between Hull and the national network.

The authority says the plan is designed to deliver schemes contributing to its priorities of reducing congestion, improving safety, accessibility and air quality.

Strategic development officer Paul Robinson added that one of the key aims was to highlight the part transport can play in delivering wider development.

"Inevitably, if the council are going to solve many of the problems faced by the city, a stronger economy will be needed and this will lead to an overall increase in transport movements."

An example of this was the recent announcement of the Green Port proposals and the expected investment at the ABP area at Saltend which will require infrastructure to support its development. He continued: "The challenge which faces the council in this LTP is to help the process of economic regeneration whilst continuing the council's existing policies which promote sustainable travel, restrict unnecessary car usage and strive to further improve road safety."

A detailed programme of schemes will be finalised later in the year.
