Councillors want answers over vanished road money

PARISH councillors are demanding North Yorkshire County Council undertakes an internal audit of its finances after they claimed tens of thousands of pounds promised for road safety upgrades has disappeared.

A number of parish councils in the Harrogate district have called for an investigation after they claim money promised by the county council under the Harrogate Rural Safety Scheme, has vanished.

Joe Aspdin, chairman of North Deighton Parish Council, said up to 20,000 had been pledged for car-activated signs.

He said: "We demand an explanation into this."

A county council spokesman said: "A thorough review is under way to establish which of the projects approved in previous years remain to be completed. "If any outstanding matters are identified as being necessary, the funding previously allocated for the work will still be available."
