Council’s help for homeless charity

A CHARITY set up to tackle homelessness in one of Yorkshire’s most desirable districts is being given free storage facilities by a council to help free up its finances.

Staff from the Harrogate Homeless Project had attempted to find storage space for donations of furniture they had received, but discovered that the cost was too high for the available funds.

Harrogate Borough Council has approved plans to provide two of the garages it owns free of charge for storage space after it was approached by representatives from the homelessness charity for help.

The potential annual loss of revenue will be £1,285, but the council stressed that there is currently no demand for the garages so, in reality, no income would be generated.

Despite its affluent reputation, the Harrogate district has been blighted by a major homelessness problem, which has been compounded by the economic slump as householders find themselves struggling with mortgage repayments and are faced with losing their homes.

In 2010, figures showed it had the second highest estimate for homelessness in Yorkshire and Humber – after Bradford – and was in the top 30 nationwide.
