County’s gastropubs get their teeth into national acclaim

TWO Yorkshire pubs are celebrating after being named among the top gastropubs in the country.

The Pipe and Glass Inn, at South Dalton, near Beverley, was named fourth best gastropub in the UK for the second year in a row – while the Star Inn at Harome in North Yorkshire took fifth place.

Chef James Mackenzie who, with wife Kate, owns the Pipe and Glass, is also a columnist for the Yorkshire Post’s Saturday magazine.

He said: “We’re delighted to be placed in the top five for the second year running.

“Tom Kerridge at the Hand and Flowers (in first place), Stephen Harris at the Sportsman, and brother-and-sister team Josh and Holly Eggleton at the Pony & Trap are all worthy winners, and we’re thrilled to be up there with them.”

The Budweiser Budvar top 50 gastropub Awards were voted for by gastropub operators, food writers and chefs.

The award is just the latest of many accolades for the Pipe and Glass Inn.

Last autumn it retained its Michelin star for the fifth consecutive year. It has won numerous other awards, including the Michelin Eating Out in Pub Guide’s coveted national pub of the year award in 2012. It is the Good Pub Guide’s county dining pub of the year for Yorkshire 2014.
