TWO of the country’s top cattle exhibitors celebrated a sensational hat-trick after taking the supreme beef championship at Countryside Live for the third successive year.

Phil and Sharon Sellers, of Belper in Derbyshire, completed their unprecedented trio of wins with their Belgian blue heifer, Lady Big Bucks.

The victory capped another strong show season for the family, with fellow farmers and exhibitors flooding into the ring to shake their hands and pass on their congratulations for the win.

Mr Sellers attributed success to a simple formula. “It needs a lot of hard work and lot of luck. All I need to do now is find another animal for next year.”

Mr Sellers also won classes for a limousin heifer and is now planning to take Lady Big Bucks to Scotland for the winter sales.

Despite his success he remained modest, telling the Yorkshire Post: “You just need to pick the right animals when they are young. If they can go through their lives and stay healthy than they will fulfil their potential that they showed as calves.

“My dad was involved in farming all of his life and he told me that if you see something in a calf when it is just three months old that is good than it will always come back for you.”

Mr Sellers only bought the animal in March this year.

The reserve interbreed was taken by Welsh farmer Dylan Hughes, making his second visit to Countryside Live. He only narrowly missed out on the top prize.
