Couple escape from wheelie bin fire

A COUPLE had to flee their home in Leeds following a fire that police believe was deliberately started in a wheelie bin.

The intensity of the fire caused the kitchen window of the house to blow out.

The nearby living room window was also broken, allowing smoke to damage downstairs rooms.

The blaze happened on Park Avenue in the Roundhay area of the city at about 4am on Monday.

The couple were able to escape from the house without injury.

West Yorkshire Police believe those responsible for the fire moved the wheelie bin and placed it between a black Peugeot RCZ car, which was parked on the driveway, and the property.

Detective Constable Ann-Marie Kent said: “This was a disturbing incident from which the consequences could have been much worse.

“Park Avenue is in a very residential area of the city and it would have been unusual to have seen anyone at the time in the early hours of Monday.

“I would ask anyone who may have seen something or has any information to get in touch.”
