Crane to be removed at weekend

A HULKING crane which has dominated a seaside town centre for the past six months is to be removed in a major operation.

The equipment had been helping to construct Scarborough town centre's first new purpose-built hotel for more than 80 years.

Around 50 jobs are expected to be created at the 74-bedroom Premier Inn, being built on the former Boothby's garage site on the corner of Falconers Road and Vernon Road.

Work on the hotel will continue into January, but, with the framework now complete, the giant crane is to be removed.

The operation involves an even bigger crane being brought in to lift off sections of the structure above and over the new hotel.

The bigger, 250-ton mobile crane, will be positioned in the Borough Council's pay and display car park next to the Palm Court Hotel and each section of the smaller crane structure will be lowered into the car park and dismantled by hand before being taken away on lorries.

The car park will be needed from Saturday, when preparation work will begin, until Monday, during which time it will be closed to the public. Crane removal will start at 7.30am on Sunday.
