Credible bid or publicity stunt? Leeds United fans have their say on Chinese takeover talk

It comes after the YEP revealed that a Chinese consortium could be about to launch a bid to buy the club.

Whites fan Steve Tappin, founder of consultancy firm Xinfu, is behind the plans and has been quoted by the China Daily as saying “there is definite interest in buying Leeds”.

A potential £100million payment is rumoured to be involved in the bid to prise the Elland Road institution away from chairman Massimo Cellino.

Our Facebook, Twitter and website forums have been lighting up with response from fans.

WhiteRoseWarrior said: “This sounds very credible but I don’t think even the most optimistic of Leeds fans would allow themselves to get carried away.”

And pete58 wrote: “We can’t carry on the way we are.”

Some showed some faith in Mr Cellino, who has recently appointed Garry Monk as the club’s eighth manager since 2014. Trevkjb said: “I still believe in Cellino and season tickets sold show Leeds fans becoming more positive making us not just Leeds but Leeds United.”

Others suggested Mr Tappin, who is also a presenter on BBC World, might have other motives. True Supporter said: “Steve Tappin is creating publicity to bolster his own company.”

Denise Leone was more concerned at the impact the rumours could have on the team.

She commented on Facebook: “Typical! Just before the start of a new season leading to more doubts and confusion.”

Dahol Stead added: “Takeover rumours seem to pop up every few months with Leeds and they never seem materialise.”
