A crew member died at an open-air concert by pop singer Will Young on Thursday night after falling backstage.

The man, who was in his 40s but has not been identified, suffered severe facial and head injuries in the fall at Rochester Castle in Kent.

Police attended the medieval castle and placed a cordon around the scene of the incident as the man was taken to hospital at around 6pm.

Before the show started later, an appeal was made over the public address system asking for any witnesses to come forward.

The 2002 Pop Idol winner Young reportedly said at the end: "Someone's had an accident tonight so let's give him a round of applause and hope he gets better."

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious and a post mortem examination was due to take place later yesterday.
