Crime writers reveal some of their secrets

Leading crime writers who specialise in setting mysteries in bygone ages will be giving away some of the tricks of the trade at The Long Weekend – this year's Scarborough Literature Festival.

Two leading figures of the genre, Lindsey Davis and Dr Paul Doherty, will talk about their work and the research behind it at Scarborough Library Concert Hall from 1pm on Friday April 16.

Lindsey Davis is well known for her best-selling novels featuring the Roman sleuth Marcus Didius Falco, a kind of Ancient Roman private eye who travels all over the Roman Empire solving crimes for Emperor Vespasian.

She has recently turned her talents to a very different time and place. Her latest novel Rebels and Traitors is set in England during the Civil war, highlighting the hardships endured by civilians and armies of both sides.

Dr Paul Doherty, also known as P C Doherty, has written numerous crime novels mainly set in mediaeval times including The Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan and the Hugh Corbett series.

His latest book, published next month, is called The Mysterium.

North Yorkshire County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, Executive Member for Adult and Community Services, said: "Both these authors are certain to captivate and inform those fortunate enough to listen to them."

Scarborough Literature Festival is organised by the County Council's library service, and lottery funded by Arts Council England.
