Antiques burglar gets an extra eight months

A PROLIFIC antiques burglar already facing eight years in prison has seen his sentence extended by a further eight months for skipping his trial and spending more than three years on the run.

Michael Edward Kenny finally began his jail term this week after police tracked him down to an address in Luton after he tried to evade justice by living under a series of false names.

Kenny had been on the run from police since November 2007 when he failed to turn up for his trial.

He was found guilty in his absence of six high-value burglaries following the theft of antiques, paintings and jewellery worth thousands of pounds from six country houses in the Malton, Great Broughton and York areas. He was yesterday given an additional eight months at York Crown Court for failing to attend his original trial.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Madgwick of North Yorkshire Police said: “Today’s outcome is the result of a determined and tenacious team of police officers and staff, and I am extremely pleased we have finally been able to bring Kenny to justice.

“His sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes, and will hopefully bring some closure to his victims. Kenny’s arrest sends a clear message to the criminal world that we will never give up searching for those people who believe they can evade justice.”
