The man, believed to have had a knife, climbed on to the low, first-storey roof of a rear extension at around 5.30am.

Armed negotiators spent the morning trying to talk him down from the roof in Hilary Grove on the Boothferry estate. At one point the man was reported to have thrown an iron off the roof.
