She said: “This is not what these competitions are about. Emotions run high at these events, and you are bound to want your girl, but these people don’t care what people think and it’s a great shame that it was ruined by thugs.

“The whole thing sounded like ‘Carry On Beauty Pageant’ and I really hope it doesn’t put Diane off, as she does a wonderful job.”

Pageant organiser Diane Yalezo said she cried for days after the thugs “completely ruined” the celebration for Jess, a student from Filey.

She said: “I had picked One Moment in Time to be the winner’s song this year, and Jess should have been able to walk onto that stage and have that one moment but it was totally ruined by that one family.”

Mrs Yalezo said she will continue running the pageant but will swap the booze for cream teas and the pub for a swanky hotel, to turn the contest into a “family event”.

She said: “It’s important for Scarborough to enter as we want to fly the flag in Miss England.”

Jess Gale will now go on representing the coastal town in the Miss England final, held in Torquay on June 16th.

Those blamed for the trouble have now been posted with warning letters from Pubwatch, threatening to bar them if they misbehave again.

Pubwatch boss Tony Snow said: “There was some trouble and if they are troublemakers we don’t want them in pubs.

“We’ve notified Filey Pubwatch and if they want to make a decision on it, and our letter says that if you do make any more trouble, then you won’t be welcome in any Scarborough venues.”

North Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called at around 11.45pm on Saturday 12 April, to the Flower of May holiday park, Lebberston, following reports of a disturbance.

“When officers arrived at around 11.50pm, the situation had calmed down.

“Police have not received any complaints and no one has been arrested in onnection with the incident.”
