Brook, born and bred in Sheffield, was attacked while on holiday.

His condition is described as “stable” by his promoters Matchroom but a spokeswoman for Spain’s Guardia Civil said he had “lost a lot of blood”.

She said: “This morning a 28-year-old British man was stabbed at Golf del Sur in San Miguel de Abona.

“He was stabbed in the left leg and is hospitalised. He lost a lot of blood.

“There are no arrests at this time and the Guardia Civil are investigating.”

Brook, long tipped for world honours in the boxing world in career beset by misfortune, finally won the IBF welterweight title with a majority decision win over American Shawn Porter in California last month.

The fighter enjoyed a civic reception in his home town last month and had been widely-linked with a superfight against fellow Brit Amir Khan, with whom he has had a long-standing rivalry.

Some reports suggested the fight was due to be announced next week.

Brook’s win over Porter stretched his unbeaten professional record to 33 fights and marked him out as one of the leading names in his division.

The fight ended a period of frustration for Brook, who had seen three prospective title fights against former champion Devon Alexander fall through in the 18 months.

Prior to his win over Porter he had been derided in some circles as a ‘domestic fighter’ who did not have what it took to perform on the world stage, sentiments he put to bed during his American victory last month.

It is the second time Brook has been stabbed, after sustaining injuries in an incident in his home city in 2007.

Brook was attacked upon leaving a nightclub in Earsham Street and sustained stab wounds to his side and buttocks. His then trainer said that his charge had been attacked by youths who had pulled up next to them in a car.

Following the initial attack Brook returned to fight some six months later.
