Boy, 17, dies after he is attacked outside North Yorkshire takeaway

A 17-YEAR-OLD boy has today been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a teenager attacked outside a pizza takeaway.

The youth was one of four people arrested on suspicion of murder after Daniel Crowther, also 17, was attacked shortly after midnight on Saturday.

Daniel, a pupil at Stokesley School in North Yorkshire, suffered severe head injuries when he was assaulted.

He died in hospital three hours later.

The death stunned residents of Stokesley, where Daniel was known as a quiet and popular student.

A statement released by his family described the devastation his loss had caused.

The statement said: “Daniel meant the world to us.

“He was a lovely young man who had a bright future and the rest of his life to look forward to.

“He was bright and popular with lots of friends who will be just as devastated as we are that his life has been cut so tragically short.

“The loss of Daniel has left a huge hole in our lives.”

The 17-year-old charged with manslaughter, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will appear at Harrogate Magistrates Court tomorrow morning.

A 17-year-old boy, 17-year-old girl, and a 25-year-old man also arrested have been released on police bail.

Enquiries are continuing and police have appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “North Yorkshire Police were called at around 12.05am after reports that a man had been seriously assaulted outside College Pizzas in College Square.

“The victim, aged 17, from Stokesley, suffered a head injury in the incident and was taken to James Cook University Hospital for treatment.

“Unfortunately, he never recovered from his injuries and was pronounced dead at around 2.50am.”
