No-one was hurt in the incidents, however the victims have been left traumatised by their experiences, police said.

Numerous resources, including armed officers, were deployed as part of the investigation.

Confirming the arrest, Det Supt Grainne Casey said tonight: “Understandably the communities will have been left frightened by the events of this morning and I would like to reassure them that the investigation is well underway and there is not believed to be any danger to the public. To provide additional support and reassurance we will have extra high visibility policing in affected areas over the coming days.

“Offences like aggravated car thefts are rare, let alone a run of incidents over such a short period of time. Given the exceptional circumstances of the incident and operational necessity, we have not been able to disclose as many details as the public would have liked in order to feel reassured, however I hope they understand the reasons.

“I am pleased to confirm that we have arrested a man who is assisting us with our enquiries. Rest assured we will be working tirelessly to ensure the everyone involved is brought to justice as part of a comprehensive investigation. Over the coming days further enquiries will be undertaken and we will continue to speak to the victims and the numerous witnesses.

“I would like to express my thanks to everyone who has called us with information and would especially like to highlight the bravery of the public who assisted us in arresting the man in Hedon this morning."

He also asked for anyone with information about the offences, those involved or information that could be helpful to the investigation to call police on 101 quoting log 64 of 03/03/17. Alternatively people can also report information anonymously on 0800 555 111.
