The army’s bomb disposal unit were contacted and attended the incident.

At around 5.15pm, West Yorkshire Police issued a statement explaining that the device had been found to be safe.

They added that the grenade had been found to have not been filled with any explosive.

Shortly afterwards, the police cordon was lifted, residents who had previously been evacuated from the area were allowed back to their homes and the various road closures that had been put in place were also lifted.

A spokesman from West Yorkshire Police added: “The public are thanked for their patience.”
