‘Burglar’ falls 30ft down well during chase

A suspected burglar who was chased away from the scene of a break-in was caught by police after he fell 30ft down a well.

The 21-year-old from Halifax, called the emergency services himself after he fell down the uncovered, 5ft-wide hole.

Minutes earlier residents in nearby Bell Street, Boothtown, had called police to report a break-in at a house, and said locals were giving chase. Emergency services were called to the well, in Claremount Road, and firefighters rescued the man two hours after he fell.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary when he was freed, and then taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with a fractured lower vertebra.
