Burglars grab historic regalia in mayor’s home

THIEVES have stolen the historic regalia belonging to the mayor and mayoress of Pateley Bridge.

The mayoral silver chains, which date back several generations, were stolen from mayor Chris Henderson’s home in Old Church Lane overnight between Monday and Tuesday in a two-in-one burglary where thieves break into a house and then escape in the homeowner’s car.

The burglaries are now a major problem with criminals travelling into North Yorkshire to raid homes and last night Mr Henderson said his red Honda Civic had been recovered in Bradford.

“It is horrible and you feel as if your house has been violated”, he said. “But it is particularly upsetting because these were items of historic value which are worth much more to the community than being melted down by thieves.”
