‘Callous’ thieves steal lights from child’s grave

THE theft of LED lights from the grave of a 12-year-old child in Doncaster has been condemned as “despicable and callous” by police.

Solar-powered lights were taken from the grave at Rose Hill Cemetery in Cantley Lane, Doncaster, at 8pm on Sunday.

The LED lights that were stolen have the name “Liam” written along the shaft, and underneath a removable panel. Four of the lights are champagne flute-shaped, and one is star-shaped.

South Yorkshire Police say the theft, the third from the same grave in the space of just three weeks, has left the child’s family distraught.

Pc Steve Roberts of South Yorkshire Police said: “While we take all thefts extremely seriously, stealing from a child’s grave is a particularly despicable and callous act.

“I would ask anyone who has any information on these thefts to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

“I would urge these people to put themselves in the position of this bereaved family, who are now having to deal with additional trauma on top of the terrible pain of losing a child.

“The lights are worth only a few pounds to a thief, but had tremendous sentimental value.”
