Candidates for top police job quizzed again

HOPEFULS to be the new chief constable of North Yorkshire Police were being interviewed today, two months after recruitment was halted so the position could be re-advertised.

The permanent successor to Grahame Maxwell, who was forced to retire last year after five years in the job, is expected to be announced on Thursday.

Mr Maxwell had previously admitted allegations of misconduct over the help he gave a relative during a police recruitment exercise.

Tim Madgwick, the current temporary chief constable, is understood to be among the candidates to take over the post permanently.

Several hopefuls for the post were interviewed in February, but crime commissioner Julia Mulligan re-advertised the post after failing to find a suitable candidate.

Mrs Mulligan said she was determined the public got the best person for the job and wanted “to test the market again”.

She said was looking for a “highly motivated, vocationally driven senior officer” who will go further in “understanding and tackling the root causes of crime and antisocial behaviour”.

The role offers a £133,068-a-year salary for a four-year fixed term, with more money for “exceptional candidates”.

No candidates have been officially named for the chief constable role, which would only be confirmed after a meeting of North Yorkshire’s police and crime panel.
