Cannabis farm electrical fire closes road

An electrical fault in cannabis growing equipment started a fire in a flat that forced the closure of one of Hull’s busiest roads.

Firefighters were called to a blaze at a flat in Hessle Road just before 6am yesterday and police closed the road between St George’s Road and Division Road for more than two hours as a precaution.

A man aged 22 has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: “Officers are warning those setting up cultivation equipment that not only could this lead to criminal investigation but also risk the lives of occupants and neighbouring properties.

“Often the buildings themselves are tampered with resulting to damage to the walls, floors and ceilings, as well as tampering with the electrics in the house.”
