Carjackers tried to drag 84-year-old man from his Ford Fiesta during West Yorkshire crime spree

James Harty and William McGinley targeted the vulnerable pensioner after he was tricked into stopping to give one them a lift.

Leeds Crown Court heard Harty, 19, and McGinley, 27 travelled to West Yorkshire from their home in Liverpool to commit offences in the Wakefield and Pontefract areas.

The pair travelled across the Pennines in a stolen car which was fitted with false number plates.

Harty threatened the driver of a Vauxhall Astra in Wakefield and ordered him to hand over the keys to the vehicle on October 4 last year.

The car was then fitted with false number plates and driven to Newark, where Harty used the stolen bank cards to commit fraud.

The pair drove back to West Yorkshire in the stolen vehicles where the Astra was set on fire.

Harty then targeted the 84-year-old victim after he agreed to give the teenager a lift.

The court heard Harty asked the victim to drive to different locations before trying to rob him of the car.

The victim managed to call for help to a woman nearby and Harty ran off.

Harty, of Harrow Road, Liverpool, then stole a car from a garage later that afternoon.

Police were contacted and a dangerous pursuit followed in which Harty drove through red lights at speed and went the wrong way on a roundabout.

The pair were arrested after the car crashed into a wall.

Harty was jailed for four years after pleading guilty to robbery, attempted robbery, fraud, theft, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and having no insurance.

He has six previous convictions for robbery.

McGinley, of Faraday Street, Liverpool was jailed for three years after pleading guilty to robbery, attempted robbery and theft.

Detective Inspector Phil Davis of Wakefield CID said: "McGinley and Harty showed no regard for any of their victims during this crime spree.

"They carried out a number of offences in a very short space of time, only to be caught and arrested after they tried to run from police.

"We recognise the distress and trauma that offences like this cause to victims and we always treat offences like these very seriously.

"We hope that the sentences act as a deterrent to others, that this will not be tolerated across Wakefield District and we will prosecute."
