PC Chris McGlynn, investigating for BTP said: “A 43-year old woman from Wakefield was travelling on the service when a man took objection to the amount of space she was taking up on the seat.

“Not wanting to get into a confrontation the woman ignored the man. He then knocked her hat off and verbally abused her. When the train arrived at York he refused to let the woman off and kept her on the train until it was empty, despite numerous pleas from her to move.

“The man eventually let her off the train but then continued to abuse and swear at her as she walked along the platform.”

Following a number of enquiries, officers have managed to isolate a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to.
