Children among the victims of modern slavery

More than half of all Britons are unaware of the most common signs of modern-day slavery going on around them, according to a recent study by Yorkshire academics.

The report by the University of Hull examining the attitudes of 1,672 adults to coincide with Anti-Slavery Day revealed that 55 per cent did not know how to spot if someone was being held as a slave. Additionally, a third of people did not know slavery involves men and children as well as women.

“Modern-day slavery often plays out in plain sight and can be difficult to detect, especially if people don’t know what signs to look for,” said a spokesman for the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation.
