Community's shock and sorrow as pensioners found dead at house in Pateley Bridge

Communities in Nidderdale have expressed their shock and sorrow after an elderly man and a woman were found dead at a property in Pateley Bridge.

Police were called to the scene at Blazefield near Pateley after concerns were raised by a member of the public, and discovered the bodies shortly after midday on Wednesday.

Both the man and the woman were aged in their 70s, officers confirmed.

No further information has been given as police today continued to establish the circumstances that have led to their deaths.

Community leaders in the area have expressed their sorrow at the news.

“I’m very sorry to hear it, especially at this time of year,” said Coun Stan Lumley, who represents the Pateley Bridge ward on Harrogate Borough Council.

“I hope their family and friends are being comforted. It is a tragedy.”

Pateley Bridge is a small Nidderdale market town on the edges of Harrogate.

“Something like this really does highlight the need for us all to keep an eye out for each other, and to look out for our neighbours,” said Coun Lumley.

In a statement issued today North Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called to a property near Pateley Bridge shortly after 1.30pm on 30 December 2020, following a report from a concerned member of the public.

“Enquiries are being conducted and specially trained officers remain working at the scene, in order to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
