County police officer takes on Big Apple

A WEST Yorkshire policeman has been chosen to teach officers of the future at a specialist criminal justice college in New York.

Dr Richard Heslop, a sergeant with West Yorkshire Police, isVisiting Professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

He started in August and will return in December when the semester finishes. The officer of 26 years’ experience, a team leader at his force’s Learning and Development Centre, came top in a selection process run by the College of Policing.

He said: “The John Jay College of Criminal Justice has a fantastic, global reputation as a world class centre for Criminal Justice and Policing Studies and I am getting to teach American undergraduate and postgraduate students.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for me to pass on my knowledge and experiences to American officers and students and to also to learn more about how the American system works”.

“As part of my work I am also carrying out research into American policing and in my spare time am volunteering at a local shelter for homeless people.”
