Patrick Kevin Shannon, 34, of Endcliff Crescent, had similar previous convictions against a police officer who tried to stop him offending.

He pleaded guilty to, on April 17 this year, damaging five police vehicles in Northway, to the value of £2,500, and to using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to a police constable.

Scarborough magistrates heard he had offended while on bail, had used a "weapon", and had caused "significant amount of damage which had a public safety impact as those police vehicles were then unavailable".

Shannon was given an 18-week jail sentence suspended for 12 months, and ordered to comply with a rehabilitation activity requirement and carry out 150 hours' unpaid work over 12 months. He was also ordered to pay £200 compensation.
