Cows dead after livestock lorry overturns near the A1 motorway in North Yorkshire


A lorry containing around 40 cows has overturned on a junction of the A1 motorway near Richmond.

The livestock vehicle toppled on the roundabout at junction 56 near to the village of Barton today at around 5.15pm.

North Yorkshire Police has confirmed that some of the cattle have died, while others have been badly injured.

A local vet has been called and some of the injured animals have been put down to prevent them from suffering further.

No other vehicles are believed to be involved and the lorry driver has not been injured.

Police attended the incident with firefighters and the RSPCA, while several local farmers have helped at the scene.

The roundabout is currently closed and traffic is being diverted while officers deal with the incident but the road is expected to be reopened this evening.
