An eyewitness in Levet Road, Doncaster, said: “I saw a car in the middle of the road with all the doors open and lots of police around.

“There were at least four officers with weapons. I’ve lived here for a long time and I’ve never seen anything like this before. It was like something out of a Western. The police officers were here until nearly midnight.”

Det Sgt Liza-Jo Hope of South Yorkshire Police, said: “Fortunately the victim and his daughter were not injured in the incident, but have been left understandably shaken by what took place.”

Police had been called to the area shortly before the incident, following reports of “loud bangs”.

A spokesman said: “While officers were investigating the source of the bangs, a further report was made from a man who had his car stopped and then stolen by a group of masked men, who were seen to be carrying a firearm.

“The five men, who were all wearing balaclavas, told the man and his four-year-old daughter to get out of their white coloured Ford Kuga 4x4 vehicle.

“We believe the loud bangs people have heard and the later theft of a car are related to the same group of men.”

Officers said there was no evidence of shots being fired.

The stolen Ford has not been recovered.
