Debate on family law
reforms due in region

THE Law Commission’s consultation on family law reform is coming to Yorkshire looking at some proposed changes relating to divorce.

Prof Elizabeth Cooke is seeking views before the commission makes recommendations to Parliament. The law relating to non-matrimonial property following divorce will be dicussed on Thursday at an vent hosted by Stowe Family Law at Leeds University.

Senior partner Marilyn Stowe said professionals and academics had been invited. She added: “However it is equally important that members of the public are given an opportunity to express their views and therefore we welcome their attendance.”

Prof Cooke, the commissioner leading the project, said: “When two people bring their marriage or civil partnership to an end it is vital that the law is able to help them resolve their financial arrangements as quickly and fairly as possible.

“The current law creates much potential for uncertainty and inconsistency. We are seeking consultees’ views on a range of short and long-term reforms, with the aim of bringing as much certainty as possible to this difficult area of law reform.”
