Doncaster man found guilty of sexually assaulting child

A 43-year-old man has been found guilty of multiple sexual offences against a young girl in Doncaster.

David Joseph Coates, of Cherry Tree Drive, Thorne, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday, September 25 and was found guilty of eight counts of sexual assault.

The jury heard how Coates abused an eight-year-old girl over a number of years in the Doncaster area.

The girl came forward in August 2014 to report her abuse to police and an investigation began.

Temporary Detective Sergeant Laura Jones, from Doncaster’s Public Protection Unit, said: “Coates continued to deny his offending, which meant the victim was subjected to the additional distress of a public trial.

“She has been incredibly brave throughout our investigation and during legal proceedings.

“I hope that the guilty conviction from the jury last week offers some comfort to the victim and her family after what has been the most traumatic time in their lives.”

Coates was remanded in custody to be sentenced on Friday, October 30.
