Driver accused of killing Owen, 6, in Wakefield hit-and-run

Peter Renshaw, 22, of Grange Drive, Emley, Huddersfield, appeared at Wakefield Magistrates’ Court in connection with the death of Owen Wightman.

Owen was struck by a car while out playing with a friend close to his home on June 18.

Today, Renshaw, who appeared in the packed courtroom wearing a dark suit and striped tie, was told the case would be sent to the crown court.

He is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.

He spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth during the brief hearing.

Reading out the charge, the court clerk said: “On the 18 June this year at Fishpond Lane, Kettlethorpe, Wakefield, you caused the death of Owen Wightman by driving a motor vehicle, a Fiat Seicento, dangerously on Fishpond Lane.

“(You are also charged with) failing to stop after the accident and failing to report the accident as required.”

Owen’s parents, Joanne, 33, and Neil, 31, watched the proceedings from the public gallery.

Following the hearing, Renshaw left the court flanked by friends and family, who were also present in the courtroom, with a hood covering his head and wearing sunglasses.

He will appear at Leeds Crown Court on December 6.
