Driver arrested after cyclist, 71, critically injured in collision near York

The 71-year-old man was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary following the incident, which happened on the A64 slip road near Copmanthorpe, York, yesterday (Thurs Aug 8).

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The collision happened at 2.40pm on the eastbound slip-road at the junction with the A1237 and involved a blue Subaru Impreza and the pedal cyclist.

“The cyclist, who is from the York area, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary where he remains in a critical condition.

The slip-road was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident and to allow collision investigators to examine the scene. It reopened at around 9.15pm.

The 21-year-old man who was driving the Subaru has been arrested in connection with the collision and released on bail while enquiries continue.

Police are appealing to anyone who was travelling along the A64 between Tadcaster and York and saw the blue Subaru or the cyclist prior to the collision and to anyone who witnessed the actual collision to contact them.

Anyone with information is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101 and ask for the Major Collision Investigation Unit.
