Eight to face trial on 74 Rotherham child sex charges over 13 years

SIX MEN and two women have denied a total of 74 charges in relation to alleged child sexual exploitation in Rotherham.

The eight defendants will go on trial next month after pleading not guilty to a range of alleged offences which, in total, involve 14 different girls and span a timescale between 1990 and 2003.

He denied six rapes, two counts of abducting a 15-year-old girl, two counts of procuring a woman under 21 to become a common prostitute, conspiracy to rape, false imprisonment, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, 11 indecent assaults, one other serious sexual assault, three counts of aiding and abetting rape, one count of procuring a girl to have unlawful sexual intercourse with another and one of attempting to procure a girl to have unlawful sexual intercourse with another.

Qurban Ali, 53, of Clough Road, Masborough, Rotherham, denied one count each of indecent assault, rape, procuring a girl to have unlawful sexual intercourse with another and conspiracy to rape.

Bannaras Hussain, 36, of Swinefleet, East Yorkshire, denied two rapes, six indecent assaults, one assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of procuring a woman under 21 to become a common prostitute.

Basharat Hussain, 38, of no fixed abode, denied two rapes, five indecent assaults, one count of procuring a girl to have unlawful sexual intercourse with another, false imprisonment, three counts of indecency with a child, one count of procuring a woman under 21 to become a common prostitute, two assaults occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of making threats to kill.

The two women - Karen MacGregor, 58, of Barnsley Road, Wath, South Yorkshire, and Shelley Davies, 40, of Wainwright Road, Kimberworth Park, Rotherham - each denied single counts of conspiracy to procure a woman under 21 to become a common prostitute, false imprisonment and conspiracy to rape.

The eight defendants, who were arrested as part of South Yorkshire Police’s Operation Clover investigation into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham, are due to go on trial on December 7 in Sheffield. The trial is expected to last eight weeks.

Judge Sarah Wright granted six of the eight defendants bail following a 45 minute hearing. Bannaras and Basharat Hussain were remanded in custody.
