England match passes off without trouble

England’s first World Cup match passed off without serious trouble in the region, according to police, as more than 15 million viewers nationally tuned in to see the 2-1 defeat by Italy.

Extra patrols were laid on in York as tens of thousands poured in to the city’s racecourse, as well as Harrogate and Scarborough before football fans turned out to watch England.

There was one football-related arrest in North Yorkshire, following a fight at a pub in Scarborough at 12.45am. Humberside Police, which had contingency plans in place should trouble arise, said there was no increase in calls for service and South Yorkshire Police said it was not aware of “anything of note”.

West Yorkshire Police had a “normal, routine Saturday night”, although a large number of domestic incidents were reported during and after the game. It revealed in the 12 hours either side of the match there were 105 calls about domestic-related incidents.

Nationally, more than 15 million people stayed up to watch the game.

Insp John Norton, from North Yorkshire Police, said high- visibility police patrols had been deployed, adding: “We couldn’t have asked for it to go better. As well as 23,500 for the races, we had the Knaresborough Bed Race which attracts thousands and the football later on.

“What happened is what we hoped would happen, that people went out and enjoyed the football and the races and those that were intent on trouble and disorder clearly realised they were on a hiding to nothing.

“When I came in this morning I was told it was eerily quiet, a pleasantly uneventful evening. I do honestly think that getting officers, Specials and PCSOs getting them out early, visible and into licensed premises, is reassuring for staff and people wanting to enjoy themselves and a warning for anybody trying to ruin it for everybody.”

Insp Steve Beveridge, from Humberside Police, added: “As far as we are aware it was a normal Saturday night in terms of volume of disorder.”
