Evil North Yorkshire delivery driver raped woman with learning difficulties after offering her a lift to Driffield

A despicable delivery driver who raped a vulnerable woman after picking her up from the side of the road has been jailed for 12 years.

Evil Richard Ramsey attacked the woman after offering her a lift as she walked into Driffield on November 25 last year.

The 34-year-old from Bedale, North Yorkshire, had driven past the woman – who the court heard has learning difficulties – as she walked into the town from the direction of Nafferton.

He then circled back and offered her a lift, which she accepted, and suggested she accompany him while he made deliveries in the area.

After assisting him with his job, the survivor then followed Ramsey back to his van where he raped her.

He then drove her into Driffield, where he dropped her off and drove away, leaving her confused and upset.

Ramsey, of View Ings Lane, Bedale, denied two counts of rape but was convicted by a jury at Hull Crown Court yesterday (Thursday).

He was sentenced today to 12 years in prison.

Detective Constable Paul Tyrer from Humberside Police, who led the investigation, said: “This was a targeted attack on a vulnerable young woman, who Ramsey took advantage of for his own gratification.

“I would like to praise this young woman for her bravery in coming forward and reporting what happened to her.

“As a result of her courage, my team and I were quickly able to identify, arrest and charge Ramsey with this offence, ensuring no one else was put at risk."

Det Con Tyrer added: “Luckily, incidents like this are very rare but have a significant, long-term impact on victims.

“I hope that knowing Ramsey is off the streets for a long time will bring this lady some comfort and help her to start to put this incident behind her."
