Ex-Bradford footballer in court over armed raid

A FORMER Bradford City footballer has appeared in court charged with an armed robbery at a post office.

Lewis Emanuel 29, who made 153 appearances for the club, appeared at Leeds Crown Court in connection with the raid at Skelmanthorpe post office in Huddersfield on May 24.

Another man, Craig Anthony Ward, 25, of Woodside, Bradford, also appeared after being charged with robbery, while Kiran Terry, 25, of Lingdale Road, Bradford, is accused of possession of criminal property.

None of the defendants entered a plea at the hearing on Thursday and will next appear in court on August 20. If necessary a trial is scheduled to start on November 25. Emanuel, from Bradford, and Ward were remanded in custody but Terry was bailed.

Police launched an appeal for witnesses after two men wearing balaclavas entered the post office and demanded money. They were believed to be carrying firearms.

Staff inside handed over cash to the two men who then made off in a car. No shots were fired and no-one was hurt.

Emanuel, who now lives in Milton Keynes, started his career as a trainee with Bradford City and made his senior debut for the then Championship club on August 21, 2001, in a League Cup victory over Macclesfield Town.

The defender played five seasons at Valley Parade, making a total of 139 league appearances for Bradford.
