Ex-detective in court over murder of policewoman Heather Cooper

A FORMER police detective was remanded in custody when he appeared in court today charged with murdering his partner, who was from York.

Peter Foster, 35, is accused of killing Detective Constable Heather Cooper, 33, at their home in West Street, Haslemere, Surrey.

Her body was found by police in Blackdown Woods near Lurgashall, West Sussex, on Sunday evening.

Dressed in a plain white T-shirt, Foster appeared for a brief hearing at Worthing Magistrates’ Court, where he spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

Surrey Police, who are investigating the case, said a post-mortem examination found the mother-of-two died from a blow to the head and a stab wound to the throat.

Miss Cooper, who joined Surrey Police in 2003 and worked in the Public Protection Investigation Unit based at Guildford police station, was described as an “exceptional officer” who was “much loved” among her colleagues.

She was on maternity leave from the force at the time of her death.

Foster, of West Street, Haslemere, will appear at Lewes Crown Court for a preliminary hearing tomorrow.
