The call was made from a public telephone box on Stainbeck Road, near to the crossroads with Stainbeck Lane, at 11.46pm on Tuesday.

The phone box was photographed by the YEP yesterday as police conducted forensic tests on it in a bid to find vital clues.

Officers say the male caller, who refused to give his name, said he believed he had heard a gun shot on Beckhill Chase as he walked down a nearby alleyway.

After the caller gave the address of 16 Beckhill Chase as the likely origin of the gunshot, he hung up.

When police arrived at Mr Stapleton’s home, they found him in the first floor bathroom with a gunshot wound to his chest.

They attempted to treat him at the scene but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

His son was found asleep in a nearby bedroom and he is now being cared for by his family.

As well as tracing the caller, murder detectives are also asking for the public’s help in piecing together single father of one Jordan’s movements in the hours before he died.

Detective Superintendent Scott Wood, from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “Jordan Stapleton was shot in cold blood in his own home. The fact his young son was asleep yards away in his bedroom makes this crime even more disturbing.

“I am appealing for anyone who can help us piece together Jordan’s movements on Tuesday evening. Did you see or speak to him? Did you see anyone going into his home or anyone acting suspiciously in the area of Beckhill Chase? I want to hear from anyone with information as to who may be responsible.”

Police would also like to speak to any witnesses who may have seen a man using the public telephone box on Stainbeck Road at around 11.45pm on Tuesday evening or anyone who recognises the caller’s voice.

Det Supt. Wood added: “I would like to reassure the caller that any information provided to us will be treated in the strictest confidence and I would urge them to get back in touch.”
