Girl, 17, bitten by police dog during Sheffield search

A 17-year-old girl has been hospitalised in Sheffield after she was bitten by a police dog.

The teenager was attacked as officers carried out a search for suspected stolen property.

South Yorkshire Police had been pursuing a speeding car in the Longley area of Sheffield, before they arrested the driver.

A search was then launched in the area following the incident.

During the search, the teenager was bitten by the police dog, suffering what is believed to be minor injuries to her arm.

Around 20 police officers arrived on the scene after 100 local residents began congregating on the street.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said: “At about 5.15pm yesterday evening, officers in Sheffield engaged in a short pursuit in the Page Hall area after a car was seen to be exceeding the speed limit.

“The man driving the car was arrested by officers shortly afterwards.

“An officer and a police dog were deployed to the Longley Lane area to search for suspected stolen property in connection with the incident.

“During the search, a 17-year-old girl has been bitten by the dog. She was taken to hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries to her arm.

“An internal investigation will now take place in relation to the incident.”
