Glasses '˜used as missiles' and drunks attacked staff at violence-hit Leeds pub

West Yorkshire Police said three of a total of six assaults recorded at pub on Albion Street, Morley, in the last year had been on staff.

Admiral Taverns Piccadilly Ltd had asked Leeds City Council’s licensing chiefs to remove two conditions, which were imposed on the pub’s licence in July 2012 after problems under a previous owner.

The conditions state a registered door staff member must be working at the pub from 8pm on nights including Fridays and Saturdays and that a supervisor must be working at the pub on specified nights.

Admiral Taverns’ application to have the restrictions lifted was due to be heard at a Leeds City Council licensing sub committee meeting on April 12.

But a spokeswoman for the company said yesterday: “Based on conversations we have had with the licensing authorities, we have decided that we are not going to pursue the application.”

A police report to the meeting states: “Six crimes of assault have been recorded with the majority stating the suspect was in or heavily in drink.

“Three of these assaults were on staff members attempting to eject drunken customers.”

PC Lynn Dobson of Leeds District Licensing wrote: “West Yorkshire Ambulance Service have called for assistance on occasions where victims have either refused to cooperate and/or drug use is suspected.

“There have been disturbances where glasses have been used as missiles.”

PC Dobson added in the report: “It is felt that the conditions should remain on the licence for the protection of staff and customers.”
